I am Yamashita of Tsukuba Meiko Table Tennis Club. The club was founded 12 years ago.
It started when I was asked to coach a general club; after that I was also asked to coach at nearby junior high and elementary schools, and today children, homemakers and older adults all work up a sweat here in their own ways.
The wonderful thing about table tennis is that it is not affected by the weather and can be enjoyed all over the world as a lifelong sport, from small children to the elderly. I myself experienced many different clubs around the country as I moved from post to post.
There were clubs that played recreationally for health, clubs that enjoyed improving, clubs that aimed to win matches, and clubs that supported children's school club activities.
At Tsukuba Meiko Table Tennis Club we offer a variety of classes to match each person's goals.
As for coaching methods, we gather what we consider the best instruction currently producing results in Japan and abroad.
But if it is too difficult, students cannot absorb it.
So at Tsukuba Meiko Club we think in terms of four basic strokes plus one, and explain everything in plain Japanese (for example, "drive" becomes "topspin").
If you correctly understand why something happens, you will be able to solve new problems yourself when they arise. That is my ideal of coaching.
Explaining thoroughly so that anyone, from lower-grade elementary school children to adults, can understand is the greatest feature of Tsukuba Meiko Club.
After a few years of playing, every student, child or adult, says the same thing: "I wish I had started sooner!"
Still, I believe that the moment you think "I want to play" or "I want to be taught" is your own right time. Trial lessons are free.
Even if you do not join, anyone may use the hall freely during hours when no classes are held. We also have four table tennis robots, so please come and experience the difference from a public facility!
