I went with max thickness.
I'm using it on the reverse side of a Chinese penhold blade.
Up until now I'd tried a different rubber every time I re-glued, but this time I repurchased the same one.
Since switching to this rubber, my reverse-side play has gotten more consistent.
It's a little on the soft side, which seems to suit me well.
I also feel like the rubber lasts a long time, personally.
