The pimple structure for Vertical 20 and Vertical 55 is placed in a vertical angle providing extra control and stability in your defensive strokes. It's been about a year since I bought these long pips, and I still use them without any worries. First, for chopping — if you swing with a firm stroke, the ball comes back low and doesn't get pushed around by the opponent's shot. If you try to match your opponent's speed, or chop with a horizontal-grain-pips feel, you'll get more net balls and long misses, I've found. The trajectory tends to be a soft, floating ball. One thing that needs practice is the push — if you don't swing through it firmly yourself, it tends to float up or go long. That takes practice. Finally, as for the cut, I don't think it bites much unless you generate the swing yourself. Also, if you just chop back a chop passively, you'll get hit through again and again. If you can swing through it yourself, it bites really well and your opponent will net the ball too. It also pairs well with the blade.

A rare vertical-pip long pips rubber came my way, so I glued it onto a Gouriki SC and gave it a test hit.
This ends up being a comparison against the Curl P-1 extra-thin I normally use, but I'd heard that vertical pips give a lower trajectory and can absorb strong chops better — in practice it wasn't quite that dramatic (might be a skill issue on my part).
I guess the effect of vertical vs. horizontal pips probably also changes depending on how you swing the blade.
As far as bite goes, I think P-1 has more of it on both chops and pushes, and I'd also give the edge to P-1 for control. Bounce felt about the same between the two.
What did bother me, though, is that the bite wasn't consistent — it might confuse the opponent, but it's a bit concerning when even the person hitting the ball doesn't know what kind of ball is coming out (again, might just be a skill issue).

I bought it because the vertical pip orientation sounded interesting. Chopping is really easy to control, but since I was switching over from a horizontal-pip rubber, I found that with the same swing it didn't bounce quite as much. That might partly be because it's the extra-thin version...
