Some penhold short-pips player I know was using this. Watching him play, the variation was enough to make me think, "oh, that guy must be using penhold long pips." When I actually tried it myself, it doesn't vary as much as long pips, but it's unsettlingly hard to play against. The blocks have bite, they go to nasty spots, and they land in reliably. Trying to get past that guy wasn't straightforward at all. If you're thinking about going the "variation" route, start with this one.

I tried this because a certain chopper was using it.
This was the first time I saw a chopper doing pushes with long pips.
Even though this rubber is OX (maybe because of that?), you can actually do pushes with it.
Both chops and pushes have insane amounts of spin.
Pushes are harder to return than smashes and carry more power.

I've really been debating whether to get this lately. The performance is genuinely high. I've had my eye on it for a while, but I was using tacky rubber which was better for me. Lately though, tacky just hasn't been cutting it anymore... I like hard rubbers and had been longing for this one. Right when I was thinking that, of all things, a friend of mine turned out to be using it. Whoa, so I tried hitting with it right away, and it turned out to be a perfect fit. The spin is about on par with tacky rubber, it bounces quite a bit, and you can also sink the ball into the sponge and hit with it. You can pull off great shots whether you're close to the table, mid-distance, or away from the table. Heavy, clean balls. I really don't know what to do now, haha.

The ball holds on the blade amazingly well. It has that distinctive wood flex, plus the bounce and grip you get from a 7-ply. It gives you solid control even with rubbers like the Arylate-Carbon or the P-1. The short game is its biggest strength. Just don't play too far back — staying close to the table for quick attacks, and it even feels like it could work with unusual rubbers or chopping. No problem at all as a step up from beginner to intermediate level. The price is good too, so I'd definitely recommend it.

This is a rubber for people who are ready to graduate from beginner rubbers like Retra. Of course, it's also fine as a beginner rubber. That's the kind of rubber this is. It has good stability, and it produces enough spin and speed for solid drives. As long as you don't back away from the table... right?
