I'd been using a 5-ply Chinese penhold blade, but I wanted to try a Japanese penhold, so I bought this one that I'd had my eye on for a while.
I never really liked the cork grip on Japanese penhold blades, but this one only has a tiny bit of cork on the index-finger area, and I was drawn to the somewhat interesting MF grip shape.
I like the design too, but what I really like is that even though it's single-ply, it's pretty thin and light.
I put the same rubber I'd been using on both sides for a test hit, and the ball speed went up by about double.
Because the weight is balanced toward the tip, topspin drives swing through nicely, and since you can snap your wrist, the spin clearly increased too.
What surprised me is that even with all this bounce, long pips still stop the ball satisfyingly well.
With pips on the back it's also easy to flip and turn, and hooking your finger on the grip's ridge lets you set a stable angle on backhand shots.
It doesn't bounce too much and stops firmly on blocks, so I felt it's easy to handle even for someone using a Japanese penhold blade for the first time.
For attacking players who focus on topspin drives, I'd recommend the MFP, and for block-oriented players, the MFR.Overall Speed Spin Control Touch Hardness Little soft

The forehand really grips the ball well too, so I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to start penhold or wanting to use a flared grip!

It's a single-ply hinoki blade, but maybe because the wood is on the thin side, it doesn't have much bounce. The grip isn't cork, so it has a solid, hefty feel, but since the weight is centered at the grip, it actually feels surprisingly light when you swing it, giving great control near the handle.
It has the decent speed you'd expect from a single-ply blade, so backhand blocks work well.
To boost forehand power, adding a side balancer near the tip would probably help.Overall Speed Spin Control Touch Hardness Little soft

I think this is really good for players with a style that swings on the backhand while also using short blocks! It gives you an easy backhand swing while still keeping that ease of blocking that's unique to Japanese penhold!

It's a single-ply hinoki blade, so some people might find it heavy, but I still think it's easy to swing
The grip has no cork so it's easy to shape, and the back also has no cork so you can put rubber straight on it
A Chinese penhold grip is hard to hold, but a reverse penhold grip has the middle finger hitting the back grip
But! This is a Japanese penhold blade, and on top of that neither side has cork, so it's the best!
In actual play too, it shows off the Japanese-penhold strength of a stable short game along with the power of a single-ply backhand!!Overall Speed Spin Control Touch
