The VS > 402 Double Extra is a further development of the very popular VS > 401. This innovation combines the very tacky, elastic top rubber sheet with a modern, slightly harder offensive sponge. The new sponge/top rubber sheet combination makes this High Energy Tension rubber the ideal weapon for any spin-oriented allrounder. The extremely tacky and flexible top rubber sheet virtually tacks the ball and produces fantastic spin both in topspin play and in defensive strokes with heavy backspin. Thanks to the optimized offensive sponge, the VS > 402 Double Extra is even more dynamic than the VS > 401, which is a great advantage in topspin play. However, even with the higher speed, the rubber still provides for high control and tackiness for dangerous backspin variants.

Looking at the rubber, the sheet is on the thick side and the sponge is hard, so my first thought was that it's really built for hard hitters. But it bounces quite a lot, so even players without much power can hit powerful shots with it! To compare it to another rubber, it's kind of like a Hurricane without the tackiness. There's no sticky, tacky feel to it at all, so I'd call it high-friction rather than slightly tacky. Naturally it's great for serves, and when you drive the ball by really sinking it into the sponge, it flies off with a huge amount of spin and a beautiful arc — I think this rubber has serious power! It was really good!

Used on the backhand for attacking (1.8mm).
I bought it because it was written up as a "hidden gem" in Table Tennis Kingdom.
It's described as slightly tacky, but there's almost no tacky feel to it — the sponge is said to be on the firmer side, but it's not that hard, and my impression was of a rubber with a lot of bounce. For backhand use it's almost a bit too bouncy. Performance-wise I thought it was a good rubber.
It gives you speed and spin, but I think it's really more of a forehand rubber. Blocks tended to fly too long and overshoot a bit. I feel the swing style for spin-tension rubbers suits it better than the swing style for tacky rubbers.
In terms of flight, speed, and spin it feels very high-performance, but if the bounce were held back a little more it would be more of an option for me on the backhand.
Compared to my current bouncy 7-ply blade, I think this would pair better with a 5-ply blade with less bounce, or a thinner carbon blade. Countering an opponent's attacking shots was easy, and I could feel the strength of the sheet.
The price is cheaper than the V-15, but I feel this rubber is plenty good enough for intermediate players too.All Speed Spin Control Hardness Little hard

Good fit for players who go roughly 30% offense / 70% defense, occasionally going for chance balls or third-ball attacks. Think of it like a Taki D made harder, with overall performance bumped up by about 20%.
If you're satisfied with your attacking power and can handle loop returns, it adds sharpness to your backspin technique and becomes a strong weapon.◎ (Great)

I used this in 2.0mm for chopping. Compared to today's rubbers it feels like a classic type — it reminded me of Tackifire D. Honestly, it doesn't put a huge amount of spin on the ball, and it doesn't give a lot of speed either. But because of that, it's easy to control. The bounce is moderate and it's not very affected by incoming spin, so chopping is easy. I'm not that good at chopping with tension rubbers, but with this one I could manage. Another thing I liked was how easy it is to produce knuckle chops. A lot of recent rubbers put spin on the ball almost automatically, but with this one it's easy to adjust yourself between cutting with spin and without. As for chopping, the maximum amount of spin you can put on a cut falls a bit short of mainstream rubbers, but in exchange it's better in terms of stability and ease of varying your shots. Especially with plastic balls and ever-higher-performance rubbers reducing the impact of a heavily cut chop these days, I think a rubber like this still has its place.
That said, while attacking isn't bad, it does feel a little lacking. So I'd say this suits a classic-style chopper who mixes things up and attacks when an opening appears, more than today's attack-focused choppers.All Speed Spin Control Hardness Little hard

This rubber pairs a tacky sheet with a firm sponge!
The combination of tacky sheet and firm sponge works great together lol
It puts a ton of spin on the ball, and you can hit solid, fast shots too!
It's also easy to control, and the short game is very easy to play!
And on top of that, topspin drives are really easy to hit, giving you a great, satisfying shot!

The VS401 in 2.0mm was too hard for me to handle, so I tried the slightly milder VS402 in 2.0mm.
Curve-long shots and topspin drives are noticeably easier to hit than with the 401, and chops still stay under control without much of a problem.
For chopping alone the 401 is better, but
since match play also calls for things like light taps and reverse-side backhand techniques,
in the end I chose this one for the overall balance.The bounce is a little weaker, but that's just right for a chopper.
I previously used Mizuno Q4 and Donic Bluefire JP02 as well, and
this has a similar character — a fairly hard sheet with strong grip.The VS402 might be a slightly softer version of the Q4.
If you're still torn trying to find the right forehand rubber for chopping,
it's definitely worth trying once!

With its hard sponge, both chops and attacking shots fly off with a loud, high-pitched crack.
On offense it gives you plenty of power whether you're close to the table or pushed back, and for chopping it holds the ball down well, just like the VS401 — it's a strange rubber that way. I'd say it's a good rubber for a chopper who also wants to attack aggressively, since the pushes come out really sharp too.
That said, it does feel like a more attack-oriented version of the 401, and comparing them at the same thickness (1.8), I felt the 401 holds chops down better.
Since it only comes from 1.8mm up, if the 1.5mm 401 is your best balance, you probably don't need the 402...Also, the rubber itself is heavy, so if you use it on both sides, be prepared for a heavy blade weighing over 200g...
