    Yasaka Mark V is one of the oldest and well known rubbers in the history of this sport. Originally released in 1969, this rubber helped revolutionize table tennis by proving that a heavy topspin attacking style was not only viable, but would also become the dominant style of table tennis from the 1970s all the way to today. These days, Mark V is still characterized by its grippy surface, medium sponge, and superb control. Today, it is a solid choice for beginners with an allround blade and all the way up to high level play when boosted and on a more offensive blade.

      I think it's easy to build a solid foundation with it too.

      Back in the day, it was pretty much either Sriver or Mark V — that's how popular and standard this rubber was.
      If you're chasing speed and spin it feels a bit limited, but the ease of control is outstanding, so I think it's a really easy rubber to use.
      From beginners to intermediate players, it's a classic that also ties in well with basic practice.

      I used this a lot back in junior high.

      Both the sponge and the sheet have a nice moderate hardness, so it's easy to put spin on the ball.
      It also has almost no quirks, so I think it's a great rubber for learning spin-based techniques like topspin drives and the short game.
      The control performance in particular is outstanding — you can land both delicate touches and hard hits without any trouble. It's like control-rubber-level control plus a bit of extra power.
      Compared to Sriver, another high-tension rubber, my impression is that Sriver has the edge in speed, while Mark V has the edge in spin and control.

      That said, like other high-tension rubbers, you can't expect the power of a tension or tacky rubber, so players above a certain level may find it lacking.

      For all these reasons, this rubber has few quirks and excellent control, making it ideal for people just starting table tennis or moving on from control-type rubbers.
