Tacky, but not tacky. Tension, but not tension.
You could call it half-baked, so to speak.
But you could also call it a capable, all-around rubber that takes the best of both worlds.
How you see it is up to you.

The people who can appreciate what's good about this rubber are "players who can really hit the ball." To put it more bluntly, beginners and less experienced players can't use it and won't understand it. The reason is that since it's positioned as a "tacky tension" rubber, beginners mistake it for a tension rubber that just grabs spin on its own. Of course it's not a full-on hardcore tacky rubber, but to bring out what's good about Shoryu, you still have to have mastered the technique and way of putting spin on the ball that's unique to true tacky rubbers - otherwise you can't unlock its strengths. For example, if someone who already plays tacky rubber and knows the technique uses Shoryu, their shots get twice as fast and turn into absolutely nasty, hard-to-handle balls. But if a beginner who doesn't know the technique hits with it, all they get is a dead straight ball with no spin and no speed - it turns into a completely useless rubber in their hands. Even though it's a "tacky tension" rubber, only someone who can actually play and handle a tacky rubber can bring out what's good about Shoryu. That said, if you already have some experience, once you get used to it, you'll be able to use it much faster than you would a full-on hardcore Chinese rubber.

This is a rubber I used to use.
I'm a chopper, and while I run inverted rubber on both sides now, back then I had this on my forehand with pips on the back.
In a word, I don't think this is a rubber a beginner can use.
It's harder than I expected, and if you chop with a really light grip it goes in fine, but if you tense up even a little it flies too far and you get overshoot misses. (I think the blade being fast is part of the problem too...)
I can't speak for topspin players, but for a chopper, I think you need about two years of experience to use this.All Speed Spin Control Hardness Little hard

The short game is easy to play with this one. Flicks and stops especially have become a lot more consistent. It's a good rubber just like the other reviews say, but for me the biggest surprise was how amazingly well short blocks stop the ball. That was genuinely shocking, and now I'm hooked on that blocking feel.

A fun rubber to use. The variety of ball qualities and changes suits me well! The spin is stronger and heavier than I expected. You can generate your own speed with it, but it doesn't have that "auto" boost feel some rubbers give you. Receives and blocks have become a real weapon for me!

An easy-to-use tacky rubber. It's only slightly tacky, but you can still feel that tacky-rubber character when you play with it. Even so, it flies just like a normal tension rubber.
Opinions will probably be split on this one, but overall it's easy to handle, unlike those hard-to-play tacky rubbers you just can't use.
If you can swing through properly and have the technique to really grab the ball, you get an interesting, unusual ball quality, which works great for me.
Is it hard? Is it on the soft side? The feel you get changes depending on your play and technique, and that's another thing I find interesting - and like - about it.All Speed Spin Control Hardness Little hard
