I've played table tennis as a penhold short-pips hitter since elementary school, and I've always been particular about my short pips!
VICTAS recently released the Quartet AFC in a Chinese-penhold handle, and I kept using the Impartial XS rubber I'd always used with it, but I started struggling because my angle hits stopped going in.
Impartial XS has amazing stability, but my play had shifted to be more defense-oriented, so I decided to go back to the VO102 I used to use.
And with that, everything just started going in!
I could play exactly the way I wanted to!
Of course, you still need proper short-pips technique for it to work.
It generates plenty of spin and is easy to punch with!
The speed is fast too, and it's stable.
This really reminded me how important the compatibility between blade and rubber is!

My practice time dropped and swinging inverted rubber on both sides got tough.
So I took the plunge and switched to short pips for the first time in my life.The switch went smoothly with no weird feeling at all.
The weight went down too, it gets spin, and it's easy to hit flat with.It's honestly a rubber that makes me glad I switched.

This is one of my favorite short-pips rubbers.
It's a horizontal-pip tension rubber, and both the spin and the bounce are really good.
I used it on my backhand — it's great both for the typical short-pips punch style and for spin-based techniques, so it really widens what you can do.
It's not that you can't get knuckle balls at all, more like somewhere in between.
I'd love for players who mix topspin drives and hitting on backhand or forehand short pips to try this one.
It bounces a fair amount, so as long as you're careful with the thickness you choose, I think it'll make a great partner.All Speed Spin Control Hardness Little soft

Topspin drives get a lot of spin.
Backhand serves and pushes get plenty of spin too.If you're a short-pips player who prioritizes spin, I think it comes down to a choice between this one or the Booster SA.

Used it on my forehand. I normally use tacky rubber on my forehand, so I put this on thinking I might not be able to adapt at all — but it worked out totally fine. Drives from away from the table work well too. And the flicking bounce that's typical of short pips is easy to use as well. I think it's really good.

I used the 1.8mm thickness on my backhand. I think it's a rubber that generates quite a lot of spin for a short pips rubber. Your opponent will probably be confused lol
Also, since it has a horizontal pip layout, it's stable overall for attacking, and it bounces really well so the speed is great too!
The only downside is that the short game is a bit harder to handle than other rubbers, probably because of the bounce. You just have to get used to that. I'd say it's better suited for intermediate to advanced players rather than beginners. It's probably too bouncy to use as your first rubber ever. Serves and pushes bite really well, and drives are easy too.
Any player who underestimates how much spin short pips can put on this will get burned.
It's a good match for Mizuno's Booster SA.
The sponge is on the slightly softer side, giving a feel where the ball sinks in and then flies off.
It doesn't fly off wildly on its own, and you can control it to a certain degree.
It has the typical flat, straight trajectory of short pips, but compared to the VO>101,
it felt like it draws a slightly higher arc.
It doesn't slip, it's stable, and there's nothing in particular that's hard to do with it.
That said, compared to the 101, it's harder to produce knuckle balls.
It's well balanced and easy to handle. Having one sheet that can cover everything
is a nice point for Japanese penhold pips players. I used it for a while myself.
But when I asked opponents about it, they said:
"It definitely has more spin than you'd expect from short pips, but it doesn't reach inverted rubber levels,
so for someone used to that, it's not really a threat.
It also lacks that nasty, tricky quality typical of short pips, so it's relatively easy to return.
It's not suited for someone who can't properly vary their spin and stroke."
If you're not focused on spin and want short pips that feels like classic short pips, I'd recommend a vertical-pip, speed-type short pips like Spectrum or the 101 instead.
